Romantic movies are affairs of the heart, love stories that focus on emotions, passion, and the romantic involvement of the lead characters (typically the lead male and female role), and the journey their love takes through the relationship or marriage. These kind of movies make a love story or the search for affection the center of the plot. In many cases in screen romances (often romance dramas), lovers face some sort of obstacles and the danger of distress, physical illness, poverty, social or racial status, or an opposing family that threatens to break the couple’s union and their achievement of love. They often explore the essential elements of love at first sight, unrequited love, young (and not-so-young) love, sentimental and spiritual love, forbidden affection, passionate and sexual love, explosive, destructive, and tragic love. And as practically in all romantic relationships, pressures of everyday life, temptations (such as infidelity), and contrasts in compatibility get tangled up into the plots of romantic movies. But these films serve as a good escape and fantasies for the audience, especially if the lead characters finally overcome any difficulties there might have been, declare their love, and actually experience the ‘’happily ever after’’ – usually implied by an emotional reunion and a passionate kiss at the end of the movie.
There are many different types of romance movies, but who can forget the great all-time classics, such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Gone with the Wind, The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca, Romeo and Juliet, and Doctor Zhivago. Movies from the early days are what we refer to as classics, because they have an evergreen charm, the romance is so beautifully entwined into the plot, and even though some of these stories have a tragic ending, it is the love between two people that inspires us.
The more modern romance movies, have a wider span of included sub-genres, and the stories may unfold differently than in the classics. There are numerous comedy romances out there, like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Love Actually, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, and Hitch. Then there are horror romances you can find; Let The Right One In, Horror Love Story, Crimson Peak, and Into The Dark. But the movies that popped out the most in the last few yearsare probably 50 Shades of Grey, and the successors that followed; 50 Shades of Black, 50 Shades Darker, and 50 Shades Freed.
